About This Form

What This Partnership Questionnaire Is For

A partnership files its own return showing the income and expenses of the business, but the partnership itself does not pay the tax. Instead the profit is shared between the partners according to their agreed shares, and each partner then reports their portion in their own tax return. This questionnaire gathers what Guardian Accounting needs to prepare the partnership return and work out each partner's share correctly.

Because two returns depend on getting this right, the details matter. Partner shares, drawings taken during the year, and any capital introduced all affect the final position. The form walks through each of these in plain questions.

Who Should Complete It

This form is for one partner completing it on behalf of the partnership. You may need it if the partnership:

  • Runs a business owned by two or more people
  • Operates as a husband and wife or family partnership
  • Owns a rental property held in partnership
  • Is registered for GST
  • Had partners join or leave during the year
  • Started or ceased trading during the year

What To Have Ready

The form goes faster if you gather these before you start:

  • The partnership IRD number and bank account details
  • Each partner's name, IRD number, and profit share
  • Partnership income for the year
  • Expense records and supporting documents
  • Drawings taken by each partner during the year
  • Last year's partnership accounts, if you have them

What Happens After You Submit

01 We Review Your Answers Bruce checks what you have provided and identifies anything that may need clarifying before the return is prepared.
02 We Prepare The Return The partnership return is prepared and each partner's share of the profit is calculated for their own return.
03 You Review And Sign The completed return is sent for review and digital signing before anything is filed with Inland Revenue.
If the profit split has changed, a partner has joined or left, or you are unsure how drawings should be treated, it is worth mentioning before the return is prepared. Add a note in the additional information field, or get in touch with Bruce before you submit. Partnership returns affect each partner's personal return, so it pays to get the details right first time.
