About This Form

What The Trust Tax Questionnaire Is For

A trust that earns income in New Zealand generally needs to file an annual return with Inland Revenue. This questionnaire is how Guardian Accounting gathers the information needed to prepare it. It covers the trust's income for the year, the expenses incurred, and how income has been treated, so the return reflects what actually happened rather than what was assumed.

Trust tax has become more detailed in recent years, with additional disclosure requirements for many trusts. Working through the questionnaire helps make sure the relevant details are captured properly, including settlements, distributions, and beneficiary information where these apply.

Who Should Complete It

This form is for trustees, or the person acting on behalf of a trust. You may need to complete it if the trust:

  • Owns a rental property or other income-earning asset
  • Earns interest, dividends, or investment income
  • Holds a family home or other property with income attached
  • Has made distributions to beneficiaries during the year
  • Has received settlements from a settlor
  • Has been asked by Inland Revenue to file a return

What To Have Ready

The form goes faster if you gather these before you start:

  • The trust's IRD number and bank account details
  • Trust income records for the year
  • Expense records and supporting documents
  • Details of any distributions made to beneficiaries
  • Details of any settlements received during the year
  • Last year's trust financial statements, if you have them

What Happens After You Submit

01 We Review Your Answers Bruce checks what you have provided and identifies anything that may need clarifying before the return is prepared.
02 We Prepare The Return The trust return and supporting financial information are prepared using the records supplied.
03 You Review And Sign The completed return is sent for review and digital signing before anything is filed with Inland Revenue.
Trusts vary considerably, and what applies to one may not apply to another. If you are unsure how to answer something, leave it blank and add a note in the additional information field, or get in touch with Bruce before you submit. Trust returns are easier to get right the first time than to amend later.
